ORGANISATIONAL MEDIATION

NOTE: Phoenix mediation is confined to work in an organisational context and not connected to personal relationship (i.e. marital and/or partner) disputes.

What do we believe?
• Disputes within or between organisations most often become obvious through how individuals behave towards one another.
• It is important to explore individual behaviours (as reported by the agent seeking the service) directly with those parties concerned in the dispute.
• Research and/or elucidation in order to make sense of why the parties are acting in ways that appear to restrict the organisation or individual(s) from moving forward is crucial to success.
• People often “do the wrong thing for the right reason” and we emphasise the usefulness of identifying areas where relationships work well.
• Creating an “affirmative” frame allows people to step back and consider afresh how their actions and behaviours are influencing the actions and behaviours of others.

What do we do?
Techniques vary and can include a combination of:
• Individual interviews
• Video recordings of the separate parties positions for sharing with the each other
• Reflective interviewing where one party is interviewed in the presence of the other who is then asked to respond
• Proximity talks where the mediator shuttles between the parties with information and questions
• Scenario workshops where a larger group of people involved in the dispute work together on pre arranged material designed to tackle the type of areas contained within the dispute but not the actual dispute itself.

What will you get?
• Organisationally sensitive mediation geared to your required outcomes
• An independent understanding of the dilemma
• Sensitive and professional interventions
• Experienced communication consultants
• Transparent “value for money” costs

Who have we done it with?
• A Hospital Trust (Working with two Paediatricians)
• Local Authority Housing Departments (Tennant neighbour dispute)
• Local Authority Social Services Departments (Parent/LA/Service provider dispute)
• A religious order in which various professional disputes led to communication breakdown
